A NOTE ON UNIT ORGANIZATION
| Army Air Defense
organization is descended from the old Coast Artillery branch, which up until World War
II, like the field artillery, was organized into regiments. During World War II both
branches were reorganized into units of separate battalions (CA BNs, AAA BNs, FA BNs).Originally designated as Coast Artillery Battalion (Antiaircraft), air defense battalions were eventuallydesignated as Antiaircraft Artillery (or AAA for short) BNs. In 1958 (1959 for the ARNG) the Army adopted the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS) for designating units. CARS established parent regiments and caused every AAA battalion in the force structure to be redesignated as a numbered BN within a parent regiment. At the same time AAA was redesignated as Air Defense and Artillery was established as one branch with air defense and field components. In 1971, field artillery and air defense artillery were split into two separate branches and all the ADA parent regiments were redesignated accordingly. |
Nike Battalion Designations: In 1953 Army Antiaircraft
Artillery (AAA) BNs were uniformly designated AAA BN. When the first Nike-Ajax BNs
were activated (or converted from gun units), they were designated AAA Missile
Battalion (Nike) (Continental). |
